Birkin 30 in Havana shiny Niloticus crocodile with palladium hardware — a piece that arrives in the room before its owner does. The scale tile of Niloticus sits tight and regular across the body, and the shiny finish amplifies every shift in ambient light. R Square stamp, 2014, like new condition. At thirty centimetres, the Birkin occupies the position within Hermès's structured-carry canon that most collectors eventually settle on: large enough to work as a genuine daily bag, precise enough to read as deliberate. The silhouette is unchanged from the original commission — a trapezoid body with a turn-lock closure, a top handle, and a profile that reads the same whether it is crossing a hotel lobby or sitting on a boardroom table. In Niloticus crocodile, it becomes a different object from its Togo or Epsom counterparts: lighter for its size, stiffer, and entirely resolved in form. Havana is a warm, saturated brown — the colour of aged cigar leaf, not earth. On shiny Niloticus, the depth of the tone shifts register as the tiles catch and release light; the tiles closest to the spine read almost amber while those in shadow return to a darker, cooler brown. The name borrows its reference from Havana tobacco, which is exactly right: the colour has that same quality of something intensely present but not aggressive. The palladium hardware, cool and silvered, gives the piece its quietest note of restraint against the warm ground of the leather. This piece is available to view by appointment at our London showroom.
