This is the part of Hermès that people buy for themselves without discussing it with anyone first. Bag charms, small leather goods, the pieces that hang off a handle or live in a pocket — objects that cost a fraction of a bag and are used far more often than one.

The Rodeo is the charm everyone knows: a small leather horse, made in three sizes, in colour combinations that change every season and are never repeated in quite the same way. It has become genuinely difficult to obtain from a boutique, to the point where it is now allocated much like a bag, and the secondary market for it is busier than for some handbags. A Rodeo changes a Birkin more than a new scarf does, which is a large part of why they move so fast.

The Carmen and the other keyring charms do the same job more quietly and are far easier to find. The Petit H pieces are a separate proposition entirely: made from offcuts of leather, silk and crystal left over from the workshops, each one is genuinely one of a kind, and they appear irregularly and vanish quickly.

The small leather goods are where the house is at its most useful. The Calvi card holder, the Bastia coin purse, the Ulysse notebook cover with its refillable insert, the Kelly and Constance wallets, the Fourbi and Bolide pouches that organise the inside of a bag. These are the pieces our clients actually replace and re-buy, because they get carried every day and eventually wear out — which almost nothing else in the collection does.

Twillys sit at the crossover between silk and accessory. Five centimetres by eighty-six, designed to be tied, and now used more often on bag handles than on wrists. Two Twillys wrapped around the handles of a Birkin protect the leather where the hand sits, which is a genuinely practical reason to own them rather than an aesthetic one — handles are the first place a light-coloured bag shows use.

Condition here is read at the corners and the edges. Card holders wear at the mouth of the slots; coin purses wear at the zip; charms wear where they knock against a bag. Leather that has softened is fine; edge paint that has cracked or lifted is what to look for, because it is the first thing to go on small leather goods and the hardest to ignore once it starts.

This category is also the sensible answer to a question we are asked constantly: what to buy someone who already owns the bags. A Rodeo, a set of Twillys or an Ulysse cover is a real Hermès object, arrives in the orange box, and is used rather than stored.

Everything here is checked by hand in our London workroom — stamps, hardware, edge paint, zips, corners and stitching — and described as it is. Pieces are new and pre-owned, and we say which. Shown by appointment in London, sent insured across the UK. If you are hunting a particular Rodeo colourway or a Petit H piece, tell our concierge and we will watch for it, which is more realistic than waiting for it to appear here.

Questions, answered

Why are Rodeo charms so hard to get?

Because they are allocated much like handbags rather than sold on demand, and the colour combinations change each season and are not repeated exactly. The secondary market for Rodeos is busier than for some bags, which tells you how much they are wanted.

What is Petit H?

A line made from offcuts left over from the workshops — leather, silk, crystal, porcelain — reworked into objects. Because it uses material that already exists in limited quantities, each piece is effectively one of a kind. They appear irregularly and go quickly.

Are Twillys just decorative?

Not entirely. Two Twillys wrapped around the handles of a Birkin or Kelly protect the leather exactly where the hand sits, and handles are the first place a pale bag shows use. The practical argument for them is stronger than the styling one.

Which small leather goods are most useful?

The Calvi card holder and the Bastia coin purse for everyday, the Ulysse notebook cover if you write, and a Fourbi or Bolide pouch to organise the inside of a bag. These are the pieces clients genuinely wear out and re-buy.

What should I check on pre-owned small leather goods?

Edge paint above all — cracking or lifting at the edges is the first thing to fail and the hardest to overlook afterwards. Then the mouths of card slots, zip action on coin purses, and corners. Softened leather is normal; damaged edges are not.

What do you give someone who already owns the bags?

A Rodeo if you can find the right one, a pair of Twillys, or an Ulysse cover. All are genuine Hermès objects, all arrive in the orange box, and all get used rather than put away — which is more than can be said for most gifts at this level.
