New, Unworn and Pre-Owned Hermès Constance Bags · London
The Hermès Constance is one of the maison's most elusive bags — produced in small quantities and rarely available at retail. Recognised by its bold H-clasp buckle and sleek crossbody silhouette, the Constance is a favourite among collectors who value discretion and versatility. At JULL, we source authenticated new, unworn and pre-owned Constance bags in sizes 18 and 24, across leathers including Epsom, Evercolor, and Swift. Every piece is verified and inspected in our London workroom before reaching our collection. Whether you want a classic neutral or a statement colour, explore our Constance selection or let our concierge team source the exact specification you need.

Pre-OwnedThe Constance is the quiet answer to the question of what to carry when a Birkin is too much bag. It was designed in 1959 by Catherine Chaillet, a Hermès designer and mother of five, and named after her daughter, who was born the day the design was finished. Everything about it is smaller in ambition and, to a particular kind of buyer, more satisfying for it.
The whole bag is organised around one piece of hardware. The H clasp is not a logo applied to a bag; it is the closure, the structure and the face of the object at once, and it takes up most of the front. That is why hardware choice matters more on a Constance than on any other model in the house: palladium makes it graphic and modern, gold makes it warm and unmistakably a Hermès. There is nowhere for the metal to hide.
It is worn on the shoulder or across the body, on a strap that adjusts and tucks away if you would rather carry it flat under an arm. The flap closes over a slim, structured body that holds a phone, a card case, a lipstick and very little else. Nobody buys a Constance to carry things; they buy it because it finishes an outfit and because it is, by some distance, the most difficult of the classic Hermès bags to find in the size and colour you actually want.
The sizes are simple. The Constance 18 — the Mini — is the one everyone asks for and the one that appears least often. The 24 is the everyday size, noticeably more useful and still slim. Beyond those sit the variations: the Constance Élan, long and low and worn across the body; the Constance To Go, a wallet on a strap; the Constance Slim, a belt-worn wallet. They share the clasp and almost nothing else.
Epsom is the leather most Constances are made in, and for good reason: it is embossed, light and holds its shape, which keeps the flap flat and the H aligned. Swift gives a softer, deeper colour and a rounder edge. Box calf, the oldest, develops the glassy patina that collectors look for and shows rain. Chèvre has a fine grain and a low sheen that suits the small format particularly well. Because the bag is small, the leather is read at close range — which is why the choice matters more here than on a large bag.
The Constance is also the model where colour does the most work. On a bag this size a saturated shade is a statement rather than a risk, which is why Rouge, Vert and the pinks move faster in Constance than in any other line, and why Noir and Étoupe remain the pieces that never sit. If you are choosing between a safe colour in the 24 and a bold one in the 18, the honest advice is that the 18 in a strong colour is what people actually reach for.
Supply is the whole difficulty. Constances are produced in far smaller numbers than Birkins and Kellys, they are almost never offered without a long relationship with a boutique, and the secondary market absorbs them quickly. A specific size, leather, colour and hardware combination can take months to surface. That is not a sales line — it is why this page is shorter on stock than our Birkin and Kelly galleries and always will be.
Every Constance at JULL is inspected by hand in our London workroom: the clasp action and plating, the alignment of the H, stitching, the strap and its hardware, edges and interior. Pieces are new, unworn and pre-owned, sourced through European boutiques below boutique retail where the market allows. We show by appointment in London, film any piece in detail for clients elsewhere, and deliver insured across the UK. If what you want is not below, give our concierge the specification and we will watch for it.
Questions, answered
What size Constance should I buy?
The 18, the Mini, is the most requested and the least available; it holds a phone, cards and a lipstick. The 24 is the everyday size and noticeably more practical while staying slim. If you want the bag to finish an outfit, take the 18; if you want to use it daily, take the 24.
Is the Constance hard to get from Hermès?
Yes — harder than a Birkin or a Kelly in most boutiques. Production numbers are far smaller and the bag is rarely offered without an established relationship. Most people who own the exact Constance they wanted bought it on the secondary market rather than waiting for an offer that matched.
Which leather is best for a Constance?
Epsom is the usual choice and the most sensible: embossed, light and structured, so the flap stays flat and the H stays aligned. Swift is softer with deeper colour. Box calf develops a glassy patina and dislikes rain. Chèvre suits the small format with its fine grain and low sheen. Because the bag is small, you read the leather at close range.
Does the Constance hardware matter more than on other bags?
It does. The H clasp is the closure, the structure and the entire face of the bag, so the metal is unavoidable. Palladium reads graphic and modern; gold reads warm and classic. On a Birkin the hardware is a detail; on a Constance it is the design.
Can the Constance be worn crossbody?
Yes. The strap adjusts and can be worn on the shoulder or across the body, and it tucks away if you prefer to carry the bag flat under an arm. The Élan version is cut longer and lower specifically for crossbody wear.
Why was it named Constance?
It was designed in 1959 by Catherine Chaillet, who worked for Hermès and had five children. She finished the design on the day her daughter Constance was born and gave the bag her name.
