NewThe Kelly is the older bag and, for a certain kind of buyer, the more interesting one. It began life in the 1930s as the Sac à Dépêches, a slim case for carrying papers, and it kept that shape entirely. Then in 1956 a photograph of Grace Kelly, newly Princess of Monaco, holding the bag in front of her to shield a pregnancy from photographers ran around the world, and the name attached itself to the object so firmly that Hermès eventually adopted it formally.
What makes the Kelly a different proposition to the Birkin is the single handle. A Birkin is a bag you open and reach into; a Kelly is a bag you unlatch. The touret has to be turned and the strap unhooked before anything comes out, which makes it slower to use and considerably more elegant to be seen using. The shoulder strap, detachable and adjustable, is the concession to practicality — and the reason a Kelly 25 can go from lunch to evening while a Birkin cannot.
Sellier or Retourne matters more here than on any other Hermès bag. A Kelly Sellier is stitched on the outside, stands upright with knife-sharp corners and is almost always made in a firm leather such as Epsom or Box; it is the formal, architectural version and the one most people picture. A Kelly Retourne is stitched inside out and turned, which softens the corners and rounds the whole bag; it is quieter, easier to live with and slouches beautifully with age. The same size in the two constructions can look like two different models.
Sizes run 20, 25, 28, 32 and 35, with the 40 now largely historic. The Kelly 25 has become the most requested size in London and rarely stays in stock; it is small but not decorative, taking a phone, a card holder and a slim pouch. The 28 is the everyday size, the one that takes a diary and a bottle of water and still looks correct at dinner. The 32 was the classic proportion for decades and now offers the best value pre-owned. The Mini Kelly — the 20 — is the hardest of all to find, and behaves as jewellery rather than as a bag.
The Kelly family extends well beyond the flap bag. The Kelly Pochette is the evening clutch, worn under an arm. The Kelly To Go is a wallet on a strap that borrows the front. The Kelly Élan is long and low, cut for a shoulder. Kelly Danse is worn on the body. All of them are recognisably the same idea, resized, and each sells to a different person.
Leather changes the Kelly more visibly than it changes a Birkin, because there is more flat surface for the eye to read. Epsom keeps a Sellier crisp for decades; Box calf gives the deep, glassy patina collectors chase and marks with rain; Togo and Clémence suit a Retourne and soften with wear; Chèvre holds colour with a slight sheen and is prized in the smaller sizes; Swift takes the most saturated colour of all. Palladium or gold hardware then sets the register — cool and modern, or warm and classic.
The practical difficulty of buying a Kelly through a boutique is the same as with a Birkin, but sharper: the sizes and constructions most people want are precisely the ones least often offered. Nobody walks into Hermès and buys a Kelly 25 Sellier in Noir Epsom with palladium. Buying through a specialist inverts the problem — you decide first, then look for the bag, and you see it before you commit.
Every Kelly at JULL is checked by hand in our London workroom before listing: blind stamp, hardware engraving and plating, stitching, the alignment of the strap and touret, corners, feet and the interior. Pieces are new, unworn and pre-owned, sourced through European boutiques below boutique retail where the market allows. We show by appointment in London, film any piece in detail for clients elsewhere, and deliver insured across the UK. If the size, leather, colour and construction you want is not below, tell our concierge and we will look for it.
Questions, answered
Kelly or Birkin — which should I choose?
A Birkin opens; a Kelly unlatches. If you reach into your bag constantly through the day, the Birkin is the practical choice. If you want a bag that reads as formal and works from lunch to evening, the Kelly with its shoulder strap does what the Birkin cannot. Many owners end up with both, and use the Birkin far more often.
What is the difference between a Kelly Sellier and a Kelly Retourne?
Sellier is stitched on the outside and stands rigid with sharp corners, usually in Epsom or Box, and reads formal and architectural. Retourne is stitched inside out and turned, which rounds the corners and softens the bag; it is easier to live with and slouches with age. The difference is far more visible on a Kelly than on any other model.
Which Kelly size is the most popular?
The 25 by a clear margin in London, and it rarely stays in stock. The 28 is the practical everyday size. The 32 was the classic proportion for decades and is usually the best value pre-owned. The Mini Kelly, at 20, is the most difficult of all to find and functions more as jewellery than as a bag.
Does the Kelly come with a shoulder strap?
Yes — the strap is detachable and adjustable, which is a large part of why the Kelly is worn as often as it is. Whether a particular pre-owned bag still has its original strap, clochette, keys and lock is exactly the sort of detail we check by hand and state plainly in the listing.
Why is the bag called a Kelly?
It was designed in the 1930s as the Sac à Dépêches. In 1956 Grace Kelly was photographed holding it in front of her to shield a pregnancy from the press; the picture travelled the world, the public renamed the bag, and Hermès adopted the name formally in the years that followed.
Can I see a Kelly in London before I buy?
Yes, by appointment. Everything on this page is physically in our London workroom, and we would rather you handled a Sellier and a Retourne side by side than chose from photographs — the difference between them is the single thing pictures convey worst. For clients outside London we film the specific bag in detail and deliver insured across the UK.
