Hermès for Men — New, Unworn & Pre-Owned · London

The World Cup summer settled the question: Hermès is a men's house too — as it was from the very beginning, when the Haut à Courroies carried saddles rather than laptops. This edit gathers the pieces our male clients actually buy: the HAC in its travel sizes, the Birkin 35 to 50, and the Kelly Dépêches with its briefcase siblings. Every piece is new, unworn or pre-owned, authenticated by us, and available to view at our London workroom. If the piece you want isn't here — a specific HAC spec, a watch, a belt — our sourcing network exists for exactly that conversation.

Hermès began as a men's house and stayed one for its first century. Thierry Hermès opened in 1837 making harness and bridles for carriage horses; the clients were coachmen, cavalry officers and the men who kept the stables. The first bags were built to carry saddles and boots. Everything the house is now famous for selling to women started life as equipment for men.

That history is not a marketing line, it is visible in the objects. The Haut à Courroies — the HAC — is the tall saddle bag of 1892 and remains the most straightforwardly masculine bag in the collection: deep, upright, built to swallow a laptop, a change of clothes and a pair of shoes without complaint. The Sac à Dépêches was a document case before it became the Kelly. The Bolide was a motoring bag. None of these were designed for anyone in particular; they were designed for a job.

What our male clients actually buy divides into three groups. There is the HAC and the larger Birkins — 40 and above — bought as travel and work bags rather than as statements. There is the everyday crossbody and shoulder category: Evelyne in GM and TGM, Cityback, Fourbi, Bolide 31. And there is the small-leather-goods and belt end, which is where most men start and where the house is at its least intimidating.

Leather choice runs differently on the men's side. Togo and Clémence dominate because they take daily handling; Epsom appears where structure is wanted; Barenia — the original saddle leather, untreated and left to develop — has an outsized following among men precisely because it records use rather than hiding it. Colour skews to Noir, Étoupe, Gris and the browns, though the most interesting pieces we handle are frequently the ones that do not.

Hardware matters less here and is chosen more quickly. Palladium is the overwhelming preference on men's pieces — cooler, less ornamental, and it disappears against dark leathers in a way gold does not. That said, gold on Barenia or Fauve is one of the better-looking combinations the house produces, and it is worth seeing before ruling out.

The practical reality of buying is easier than on the women's side. Men's pieces are less hunted, which means the secondary market holds them longer and specific specifications are genuinely findable rather than a matter of waiting. A HAC in a particular size and leather can usually be sourced in weeks. The exception is Barenia, which has become difficult across the board.

This page is an edit rather than a category — Hermès does not divide its bags by gender and neither, strictly, do we. What is gathered here is what men buy from us: the larger formats, the crossbodies that work over a coat, the belts and the small leather goods. Women buy from this page too, and a HAC on a woman is one of the better looks in the collection.

Every piece here is inspected by hand in our London workroom before listing — stamp, hardware, stitching, corners, base and interior — and described as it is rather than as it would sell best. Pieces are new, unworn and pre-owned, sourced through European boutiques below boutique retail where the market allows. Shown by appointment in London, filmed in detail for clients elsewhere, delivered insured across the UK.

Questions, answered

Which Hermès bag is best for a man?

The HAC for work and travel — it is the original saddle bag and the most straightforwardly masculine thing the house makes. For everyday, an Evelyne in GM or TGM, a Bolide 31 or a Cityback. Most men start with a belt or small leather goods and move up from there.

What is the difference between a HAC and a Birkin?

The HAC came first, in 1892, and was built to carry saddles and boots; the Birkin is its descendant, brought down in height in 1984. A HAC is noticeably taller and deeper for its width, which is why it works as a work and travel bag where a Birkin of the same number does not.

Is Barenia leather worth looking for?

It has a strong following for good reason: it is the original untreated saddle leather and it records use rather than concealing it, darkening and softening over years. It has also become genuinely difficult to find across all models, so if a Barenia piece in the right size appears, it does not sit for long.

Which hardware do men usually choose?

Palladium, by a wide margin — it is cooler and less ornamental and it recedes against dark leathers. Gold on Barenia or Fauve is one of the better combinations the house makes, though, and is worth seeing in person before dismissing.

Are men's Hermès pieces easier to buy than women's?

Generally yes. They are less hunted on the secondary market, so specific specifications are findable rather than a matter of chance, and a HAC in a particular size and leather can usually be sourced within weeks. Barenia is the exception and is difficult across the board.

Does Hermès make separate men's bags?

Not formally — the house does not divide its bags by gender, and neither do we. This page is an edit of what our male clients actually buy: larger formats, crossbodies that work over a coat, belts and small leather goods. Plenty of women buy from it too.
