The piece in detail

Braise is Hermès' hottest red — deeper than Rouge Casaque, cleaner than Rouge H, named for the ember rather than the flame. On shiny Niloticus crocodile it behaves like lacquer: the polished tiles throw light back in bands, and the colour reads almost black in the fold of the gusset before opening to full saturation across the front panel. Niloticus is the skin collectors ask for by name. Its scales are squarer and more regular than Porosus, with the characteristic hairline pore visible on each tile, and a Birkin 30 requires a hide graded high enough to run the belly cleanly across both flap and body. On this example the centre seam is matched tile for tile and the corners hold their shape without the softening that lesser crocodile shows within a season. Palladium is the correct decision here. Against a red this saturated, gold would tip the bag towards costume; the cool white metal holds it in check. The turn-lock closes with the short, weighted click of hardware that has never been forced, and the sangles show no stretch at the pivot. At 30 cm this is a Birkin you can genuinely use — a folio, a phone, a wallet and a scarf — though few clients treat a shiny crocodile 30 as an everyday bag. It is a dinner bag scaled up, or a travelling piece for someone who does not travel light in the ordinary sense. Stamped Square N and store fresh. Original box, dust bag, raincoat, clochette, cadenas, two keys and CITES paperwork included. Inspected at JULL London and available for private viewing by appointment in Chelsea Harbour. Priced at £26,000. Enquire for provenance detail, a full condition report and CITES export notes.
