Hermès jewellery begins with a chain and a harbour. In 1938 Robert Dumas, watching boats at anchor in Normandy, drew the link of an anchor chain and turned it into a bracelet. The Chaîne d'Ancre has been in production ever since, and almost everything the house has made in metal since descends from that one decision to treat working hardware as ornament.

That principle is why Hermès jewellery looks unlike anyone else's. The Collier de Chien is a dog collar. The Kelly bracelet is a bag closure worn on a wrist, complete with touret and strap. The Clic H is a bangle with the closure of a piece of tack. Nothing here is abstract decoration; each object is a piece of equipment scaled down and made beautiful, which is precisely the appeal to people who dislike jewellery that announces itself.

The enamel bangles deserve a paragraph of their own, because they connect to the silks. Clic H and Clic Clac H are printed with the same designs and colourways as the scarves, layer by layer, then fired. That means an enamel bangle is effectively a carré you can wear on a wrist, and it also means discontinued colourways behave like discontinued scarves — the ones that were made for a single season are the ones people hunt.

Sizing is the thing most often got wrong. Clic bangles come in PM and GM widths and in two or three circumferences depending on the model, and the difference between them is not academic — a bangle that does not clear the wide part of the hand is unwearable, and one that spins constantly is irritating. Kelly bracelets and Chaîne d'Ancre come in lengths rather than widths. We list the exact size marked on each piece rather than describing it as small or large.

Metal and finish set the register in the same way hardware does on a bag. Palladium-plated pieces read cool and modern; gold-plated pieces warm the whole wrist. Solid gold exists in the fine jewellery lines and is a different category entirely. On plated pieces, wear shows at the high points — the edge of a Clic, the underside of a Chaîne d'Ancre link — and it is the first thing to look at on anything pre-owned.

Enamel condition is its own question. Fired enamel is glass: it does not scratch the way metal does, but it chips, and a chip cannot be repaired invisibly. On a Clic H the vulnerable points are the two edges and the closure. We photograph those specifically rather than shooting the flattering face of the bangle.

Jewellery is also where Hermès is most accessible and most given. A Clic H or a Farandole costs less than a scarf in some cases, arrives in the same orange box, and requires no relationship with a boutique. It is the category most of our clients buy first and buy repeatedly.

Every piece at JULL is checked by hand in our London workroom: hallmarks and engraving, plating condition at the wear points, enamel edges and closure, clasp action and the exact size marking. Pieces are new and pre-owned, and we say which. Shown by appointment in London, sent insured across the UK.

Questions, answered

What is the Chaîne d'Ancre?

The anchor-chain link Robert Dumas drew in 1938 after watching boats at anchor in Normandy, turned into a bracelet. It is the origin of Hermès jewellery and the reason the house's metal work is built on working hardware rather than abstract ornament.

How do I choose a Clic H size?

Clic bangles come in PM and GM widths and in different circumferences. The circumference has to clear the wide part of your hand without the bangle spinning once it is on. We list the exact marking on each piece rather than calling it small or large, because the difference genuinely matters.

Can chipped enamel be repaired?

Not invisibly. Fired enamel is glass — it resists scratching but chips, and the vulnerable points on a Clic H are the two edges and the closure. We photograph those areas specifically on every pre-owned piece rather than only the good face.

Is Hermès jewellery solid gold?

The plated pieces — Clic H, most Chaîne d'Ancre bracelets, Kelly bracelets — are gold or palladium plated over metal. Solid gold exists in the fine jewellery lines and is a separate category at a very different price. We state which a piece is.

Why do enamel bangles come in so many designs?

Because they are printed like the scarves, in the same designs and colourways, layer by layer and then fired. A discontinued colourway behaves like a discontinued carré — the single-season ones are what collectors look for.

Is jewellery a good way to start with Hermès?

It is the most accessible way in. A Clic H or a Farandole costs a fraction of a bag, comes in the orange box and needs no boutique relationship. It is the category most of our clients buy first and keep buying.
