Hermès Swift Leather Bags · London
Swift is the leather Hermès reaches for when colour is the point — a fine-grained calfskin with a subtle sheen that saturates dye more deeply than any other house leather, making reds glow and pastels look almost lit from within. Smooth and soft to the hand, it suits smaller pieces beautifully: the Kelly Pochette, the Mini Kelly Doll, the In-the-Loop. Each Swift piece at JULL is authenticated and inspected in our London workroom. See the current selection below, or ask our concierge to hunt down a specific Swift colour for you.

Swift is the leather Hermès uses when colour is the point. It is a smooth, fine-grained calfskin — known as Gulliver until the house renamed it in the mid-2000s — and its surface is open enough that dye sinks into it rather than sitting on top. The result is depth no embossed or heavily grained leather can reach.
That depth is not a marketing distinction; it is visible across a room. A red in Swift has an interior glow to it. A Bleu Nuit reads almost like ink. Pale colours pick up a softness that Epsom flattens. If you have ever seen a photograph of a Hermès bag in a colour that seemed impossibly rich, there is a good chance you were looking at Swift.
It is also the softest of the everyday calfskins to the hand, with a slight give that makes small bags feel expensive in a way that is hard to describe and immediate to feel. That is why Swift appears so often on the pieces you hold rather than carry: Mini Kellys, Constances, Kelly Pochettes, small leather goods.
The trade is honest and worth stating clearly. A smooth surface has nowhere to hide a scratch. Swift marks more readily than Togo, Clémence or Epsom, and on a large bag carried daily it will show its life within a year. Many light surface marks can be worked out by a good specialist, and shallow ones sometimes settle on their own — but this is not a leather for someone who will be unhappy the first time it happens.
It also dislikes water more than the grained leathers. A drop dries as a spot before it settles, and pale Swift shows it most. For that reason we tend to suggest Swift for evening bags, small pieces and anyone whose bag lives indoors, and Togo or Epsom for a bag that goes everywhere.
On a small piece those objections largely fall away, which is why the pairing of Swift with the Mini Kelly, the Constance 18 and the Kelly Pochette is so common. A bag carried in the hand for an evening will never take the punishment that puts marks on a 35, and what you keep is the colour.
When buying pre-owned Swift, the surface is the whole assessment. We look at it in raking light rather than flat light, because that is the only way marks show honestly, and we photograph it the same way. A Swift bag described as flawless in soft studio lighting should be treated with polite scepticism.
Every Swift piece at JULL is inspected by hand in our London workroom, examined in raking light for surface marks and water spotting, and described exactly as it is. Pieces are new, unworn and pre-owned, sourced through European boutiques below boutique retail where the market allows. Shown by appointment in London, filmed in detail for clients elsewhere, delivered insured across the UK.
Questions, answered
What is Swift leather?
A smooth, fine-grained calfskin, called Gulliver until the house renamed it in the mid-2000s. Its open surface lets dye sink in rather than sit on top, which gives it more colour depth than any other everyday Hermès leather.
Does Swift scratch easily?
More readily than Togo, Clémence or Epsom, because a smooth surface gives a mark nowhere to hide. Many light surface marks can be worked out by a specialist and shallow ones sometimes settle. It is not the leather for someone who will mind the first mark.
Why is Swift used on small bags?
Because the objections mostly disappear at small scale. A Mini Kelly or a Kelly Pochette carried for an evening never takes the punishment a daily 35 does, so you keep the colour depth and the soft hand without the wear.
Is Swift good for a Birkin?
It is beautiful and it will show its life within a year of daily carrying. If the bag is for occasions or you accept marks as character, Swift gives colour nothing else can. For an everyday bag, Togo or Epsom is the steadier answer.
How does Swift handle water?
Less well than the grained leathers. A drop can dry as a spot before it settles, and pale Swift shows it most. We suggest it for pieces that live indoors and Togo or Epsom for a bag that goes everywhere.
How should a pre-owned Swift bag be assessed?
In raking light rather than flat light — it is the only way surface marks show honestly, and it is how we photograph it. A Swift bag described as flawless under soft studio lighting deserves polite scepticism.
