The Herbag is what happens when the house applies its own history to a bag meant to be used carelessly. Its silhouette is the Kelly's — the flap, the touret, the proportions — but the body is toile canvas and the trim is Vache Hunter, an untreated leather left to darken on its own. The result reads unmistakably as Hermès from across a street and costs a fraction of what the leather version does.

The lineage runs further back than most owners realise. Its ancestor is the Haut à Courroies, the tall saddle bag of 1892, by way of a canvas-bodied design the house made in the 1970s. That earlier Herbag had a genuinely unusual idea behind it: one leather frame, two interchangeable canvas bodies, so a single bag could be two. The current Herbag Zip, reintroduced in 2009, simplified that into a single body with a zipped closure under the flap.

Vache Hunter is the part that repays attention. It arrives pale, almost raw, and it does not stay that way — sunlight and handling pull it towards honey and then towards a deep tan over a few years. Two Herbags of the same age can look entirely different depending on how they were carried, and unlike scratching on a treated leather, this ageing is the point rather than damage. Buyers who want the bag to look new forever should look elsewhere; buyers who like an object with a record of itself should look here.

Sizes are 31 and 39. The 31 is the everyday size and the one most people mean, taking a full day without bulk. The 39 is a genuine tote and reads considerably larger in canvas than the numbers suggest, because the material has no rigidity of its own. Both carry in the hand or on the shoulder with a detachable strap, and both use the same flap and turn-lock as the Kelly, which is why the Herbag is so often someone's introduction to the way that closure works.

The canvas is what makes it practical and also what limits it. Toile is light, tough and unbothered by daily use, but it stains where leather would wipe clean, and a canvas body cannot be refinished the way a hide can. On the secondary market that means condition on a Herbag is really a question about the canvas: the leather trim will have darkened, and that is fine, but a mark on the body is permanent.

It is bought for a specific reason and it is worth naming plainly: the Herbag gives the Kelly's shape and the house's construction to someone who is not prepared to carry a bag that must be protected. It goes on a train. It goes to work. It gets rained on and does not become a crisis. Very little else in the collection can be described that way.

Supply is uneven. The Herbag is produced in reasonable numbers but is not a permanent fixture in every boutique, and particular canvas-and-trim combinations appear and disappear seasonally. Because it sits at a lower price point than the leather classics, pieces move quickly on the secondary market when a good colour surfaces — more quickly, often, than a comparable Bolide.
