Hermès Kelly Pochette · London

The Kelly Pochette is the Kelly distilled to an evening clutch — no strap, no compromise, just the sculpted flap, turn-lock and a silhouette that reads instantly across a room. Offered by Hermès only sporadically and almost never at first request, it has quietly become one of the most collected small pieces in the catalogue, particularly in Swift, ostrich and the great exotics. Every Kelly Pochette at JULL is authenticated and inspected by hand in our London workroom. Browse what is currently on the floor, or let our concierge source a specific skin.

The Kelly Pochette is the Kelly reduced to its idea. There is no shoulder strap in the classic form, no compartments and very little volume — a flat clutch carried under the arm, with the flap, the touret and the plaque of the full bag rendered at a fraction of the size. It is the most formal object Hermès makes in leather and one of the least practical, and both of those are the point.

What goes in it is a phone, a card, a key and a lipstick, and that is the honest list. It exists for evenings, for weddings, for the parts of a life where carrying anything is already a compromise. Owners of Birkins and Kellys buy it as a third or fourth piece rather than a first, which is why it appears in the collection far less often than its popularity would suggest.

Because the surface is small and unbroken, the leather is read at conversation distance. Box calf gives the glassy formality the piece was designed around and is the classical answer. Epsom keeps the flap crisp and resists the handling a clutch inevitably takes. Chèvre suits it particularly. Swift carries the deepest colour. Exotics — alligator and crocodile especially — are what the Pochette is most often made in at the top of the range, because a small piece can use a section of skin that a Birkin cannot.

Hardware is proportionally enormous here. On a clutch this size the touret and plaque occupy a substantial share of the visible surface, and the difference between palladium and gold is not a nuance — it changes what the object is. This is the piece where clients most often reverse their usual preference.

Some pieces are found with a strap or chain added, either from the house or aftermarket. That changes how a Pochette can be worn and it also changes what it is worth, so it is worth knowing which you are looking at. We state plainly what came with any piece rather than photographing it styled in a way that implies more.

Condition on a clutch is read differently to a bag with feet. There is no base to protect it, so the underside takes the wear, and the corners take it first. On Box calf the surface shows every contact it has ever had, which some buyers consider patina and others consider damage — we photograph the underside and corners specifically so you can decide which you are.

Supply is thin and irregular. The Pochette is made in small numbers, it is rarely offered in a boutique to specification, and on the secondary market a good colour in Box or an exotic is gone quickly. If you want a particular combination the realistic approach is a standing brief rather than a search.

Every Kelly Pochette at JULL is inspected by hand in our London workroom — stamp, hardware engraving and plating, touret action, the underside and corners, edges and interior — and we state exactly what accompanies it. Pieces are new, unworn and pre-owned, sourced through European boutiques below boutique retail where the market allows. Shown by appointment in London, filmed in detail for clients elsewhere, delivered insured across the UK.

Questions, answered

What fits in a Kelly Pochette?

A phone, a card, a key and a lipstick. It is an evening piece rather than a working bag, and it is usually bought as someone’s third or fourth Hermès rather than their first.

Does the Kelly Pochette have a strap?

In its classic form it is a clutch carried under the arm. Some pieces are found with a strap or chain added, from the house or aftermarket, which changes both how it is worn and what it is worth. We state plainly what accompanies any piece we list.

Which leather suits a Kelly Pochette?

Box calf is the classical answer and gives the glassy formality the piece was designed around. Epsom stays crisp and handles the contact a clutch takes. Chèvre suits it particularly. Exotics are common at the top of the range, because a small piece can use a section of skin a Birkin cannot.

Why does hardware matter so much on a Pochette?

Because the touret and plaque occupy a large share of a small visible surface. Palladium and gold do not accent this piece, they define it — and it is the item on which clients most often reverse their usual preference.

What should I check on a pre-owned Kelly Pochette?

The underside and the corners, since there are no feet to protect it and that is where wear concentrates. On Box calf the surface records every contact it has had. We photograph those areas specifically rather than only the flap.

Is the Kelly Pochette hard to find?

Yes. It is made in small numbers, rarely offered to specification, and a good colour in Box or an exotic disappears quickly on the secondary market. A standing brief with our concierge is more realistic than searching for one.
