White & Cream Hermès Bags · London

The white end of the Hermès palette — Craie’s chalky ivory, Nata’s milk, New White, Vanilla, Béton — is where the house’s leathers show their quality most nakedly: there is nowhere for a flaw to hide in a pale bag, which is exactly why collectors prize clean examples. These shades appear sparingly and sell quickly, particularly in the Mini Kelly and Birkin 25. Every white and cream piece at JULL is authenticated and inspected by hand in our London workroom. Browse the current selection or set our concierge on a specific shade.

White at Hermès is not one colour but a small family of them, and the names matter more here than anywhere else in the palette. Craie is chalk — soft, slightly warm, the most requested of them. Nata is creamier still. Blanc is a true optical white and appears far less often. Béton and Gris Perle sit at the cool edge. Sellers use the words loosely; the differences are visible side by side and they affect value.

These are the shades that photograph best and live hardest. A chalk Kelly in daylight is among the most beautiful things the house makes, and it is also the bag that will show a single afternoon of carelessness. Anyone choosing white should decide first whether they want an object to use or an object to keep, because the answer changes which leather they should buy.

That is where Epsom earns its place. Because the surface is embossed and slightly closed, ordinary marks wipe off it in a way they will not off Swift, Togo or Box. For a pale bag intended for genuine use, Epsom is close to the only sensible choice, and it is why so much of the best white stock exists in that leather.

Colour transfer is the real enemy, not dirt. Dark denim, a dyed coat lining, a newspaper — these move pigment onto pale leather, and once it is in, it is a specialist job rather than a cloth-and-water one. The back panel goes first because it rests against clothing. On a pre-owned white bag this is the first thing to examine and the thing photographs most often conceal.

Hardware reads very differently against chalk. Palladium keeps the bag crisp and cool and is the usual choice; gold warms the whole thing perceptibly and makes Craie read closer to cream than to chalk. If you are buying a white bag specifically for its coolness, gold hardware will work against you.

The seasonal argument is worth having honestly: whites do move less in a British winter and more in spring, which affects both what is available and what things sell for. That is a rhythm rather than a rule, and a well-kept Craie Epsom Kelly does not sit in any month.

Care is undramatic if it is done at all. Store away from denim and dyed fabrics, keep the dust bag on, and deal with a mark early rather than hoping. Nothing exotic is required — the failures we see are almost always neglect rather than accident.

Every white and cream piece at JULL is inspected in daylight-balanced light in our London workroom, because warm studio lamps flatter pale leather dishonestly, and the back panel, base corners and handles are photographed specifically. We name the exact shade rather than writing white. Pieces are new, unworn and pre-owned, sourced through European boutiques below boutique retail where the market allows. Shown by appointment in London, filmed in detail for clients elsewhere, delivered insured across the UK.

Questions, answered

What is the difference between Craie, Nata and Blanc?

Craie is chalk, soft and slightly warm, and the most requested. Nata is creamier. Blanc is a true optical white and much less common. Béton and Gris Perle sit at the cool edge. Sellers use the words loosely; the differences are visible side by side and they affect value.

Which leather is best for a white bag?

Epsom, by a distance. The embossed, slightly closed surface lets ordinary marks wipe away in a way they will not off Swift, Togo or Box. For a pale bag meant to be used rather than kept, it is close to the only sensible choice.

What is colour transfer and how bad is it?

Pigment moving onto pale leather from dark denim, a dyed lining or newsprint. It is the real enemy rather than dirt, because once it is in, removing it is a specialist job. The back panel shows it first, and photographs conceal it easily.

Gold or palladium hardware on a white bag?

Palladium keeps the bag crisp and cool and is the usual choice. Gold warms it perceptibly and pushes Craie towards cream. If you are buying white specifically for its coolness, gold hardware will work against you.

Are white bags harder to sell?

They move less in a British winter and more in spring, which affects availability and price through the year. It is a rhythm rather than a rule — a well-kept Craie Epsom Kelly does not sit in any month.

How should a white Hermès bag be stored?

Away from denim and dyed fabrics, in its dust bag, and any mark dealt with early rather than left. Nothing elaborate is needed; the damage we see on pale bags is almost always neglect rather than accident.
