Hermès Clemence Leather Bags · London

Taurillon Clemence is the most relaxed of the great Hermès leathers — a heavier bull calfskin with a larger, flatter grain and a soft, matte slouch that makes a Lindy drape beautifully and gives a Birkin an easy, unforced elegance. It is wonderfully durable in daily use and forgiving of life in a way stiffer leathers are not. At JULL, every Clemence piece is authenticated and checked by hand in our London workroom. Clémence — properly Taurillon Clémence — is the leather for people who want a bag that relaxes. It is a bull calf like Togo, but the grain is larger, flatter and less raised, and the hide itself is heavier and softer. Where Togo holds its posture, Clémence lets go, and it does so deliberately.

That slouch is the reason it exists in the collection and the reason it is chosen. A Clémence Birkin worn regularly for a few years develops a fall through the sides that no new bag can imitate and that many owners spend years hoping for. On a Lindy or a Picotin, where softness is the entire design, Clémence is not merely suitable — it is the point.

It is heavier than Togo, and honestly that is the trade. In a 25 or a Picotin 18 the weight is irrelevant. In a Birkin 35 or a large tote it is noticeable by the end of a day, and anyone who already finds bags heavy should look at Togo or Epsom instead. This is the single most useful thing to know before choosing it.

The larger grain changes how colour reads. Because the surface is flatter and more open, dye sinks rather than sits, and colours come out slightly deeper and more matte than the same shade in Togo. Neutrals in particular — Étoupe, Gris, the browns — look richer in Clémence than anywhere else, which is why so much of the best-looking everyday stock is in exactly those combinations.

It marks less than a smooth leather and slightly more than Togo, because the flatter grain gives a scratch marginally more room to be seen. In practice this is a distinction for a jeweller’s loupe rather than a shop floor. What Clémence does show, over years, is where it has been folded and pressed, and that is character rather than damage.

Condition on Clémence is read differently from a structured leather, and buyers frequently get this wrong. A Clémence bag that stands rigidly to attention has barely been used; one that falls softly has been carried. What matters is the base, the corners and the handle attachments — the places a heavy, soft leather puts its load — not how upright it looks in a photograph.

On availability Clémence sits comfortably: it is widely produced, appears across most models and colours, and specific combinations are findable rather than a matter of luck. It is also frequently better value than the same bag in Togo, for no reason other than fashion.

Every Clémence piece at JULL is inspected by hand in our London workroom — base, corners, handle attachments, grain, stamp, hardware and interior — and photographed as it actually hangs rather than stuffed to look structured. Pieces are new, unworn and pre-owned, sourced through European boutiques below boutique retail where the market allows. Shown by appointment in London, filmed in detail for clients elsewhere, delivered insured across the UK.

Questions, answered

What is the difference between Clémence and Togo?

Both are bull calf. Clémence has a larger, flatter grain, is heavier and slouches decisively; Togo has a finer, raised grain, is lighter and holds more shape. Choose Clémence if you want the bag to relax and Togo if you want it to stay upright.

Is Clémence heavy?

Yes, noticeably heavier than Togo. In a 25 or a Picotin it is irrelevant; in a Birkin 35 or a large tote you will feel it by the end of a day. Anyone who already finds bags heavy should look at Togo or Epsom.

Does Clémence lose its shape?

It softens and falls, and that is what it is chosen for. A Clémence bag standing rigidly has barely been used. When buying pre-owned, look at the base, corners and handle attachments rather than at how upright the bag stands.

Which bags suit Clémence best?

The soft ones — Lindy, Picotin, Bolide and a Retourne Birkin or Kelly. On a design where slouch is the intention, Clémence is not merely suitable but the natural choice.

How does colour look in Clémence?

Deeper and more matte than in Togo, because the flatter, more open surface lets dye sink rather than sit. Neutrals such as Étoupe, Gris and the browns look richer in Clémence than in anything else.

Is Clémence good value?

Often better value than the same bag in Togo, for reasons of fashion rather than quality. It is widely produced, so specific colours and models are findable rather than a matter of waiting.
