Hermès Birkin 30 · London

The Birkin 30 is the classic proportion — the size most people picture when they picture a Birkin, generous enough for a working day yet never unwieldy. It is the sweet spot between the jewel-like 25 and the travel-ready 35, and the size in which the great neutrals — Gold, Etoupe, Black — feel most at home. At JULL, every Birkin 30 is authenticated and inspected by hand in our London workroom, from stitching to stamp. Browse the current selection below, or ask our concierge to source a specific colour and leather.

The Birkin 30 is the size people settle on. It is not the one photographed most, and it is not the one that commands the loudest premium, but it is the one owners reach for on the largest number of days — and among clients who own more than one Birkin, it is almost always the 30 that shows wear first.

What it holds is the argument. An A5 diary, a full-size purse, a make-up pouch, sunglasses in a case, a small bottle and a folded scarf, with room left. A 13-inch laptop will not go in comfortably; that is where the 35 begins. The 30 sits precisely at the point where a bag stops being decorative and has not yet become luggage.

Almost all 30s are Retourne — stitched inside out and turned, so the corners round and the bag softens with wear. Sellier exists at this size and is worth seeing if you want the architectural version, though it is far less common and almost always Epsom. A Retourne 30 that has been carried for five years develops a slouch that a new bag cannot imitate, and a great many buyers are specifically looking for that.

Leather does most of the work at this size. Togo is the everyday answer: light for the volume, fine-grained, forgiving of handling. Clémence is heavier with a larger grain and slouches more decisively. Epsom keeps the shape crisp and weighs least of the calfskins. Swift takes colour deeper than any of them and marks more readily. Box calf on an older 30 develops the glassy patina collectors look for and dislikes rain.

On availability the 30 is the reasonable one. It is produced in greater numbers than the 25, it is offered more often in boutiques, and it appears on the secondary market with far more variety of colour and leather. If you want a specific combination — a particular blue in Togo with palladium, say — the 30 is the size in which you are most likely to find it rather than wait for it.

It is also the size that suits the widest range of people. A 25 flatters a smaller frame and a light day; a 35 needs a certain confidence and a real load to justify it. The 30 does neither: it works on almost anyone, over a coat or without, in a meeting or on a train.

Value behaves differently here than on the 25. The 30 has not run up as sharply, which cuts both ways — it is the more sensible entry into the model and the less speculative one. Condition and colour drive the number more than size does at this end, and a well-kept Noir or Étoupe 30 remains one of the steadiest things in the collection. That is an observation of the market rather than advice.

Every Birkin 30 at JULL is inspected by hand in our London workroom — stamp, hardware engraving and plating, stitching, corners, feet, cadenas, keys and clochette — and described plainly, slouch and all. Pieces are new, unworn and pre-owned, sourced through European boutiques below boutique retail where the market allows. Shown by appointment in London, filmed in detail for clients elsewhere, delivered insured across the UK.

Questions, answered

What fits in a Birkin 30?

An A5 diary, a full purse, a make-up pouch, sunglasses in a case, a small bottle and a folded scarf, with room left. A 13-inch laptop will not go in comfortably — that is where the 35 starts.

Is the Birkin 30 the best everyday size?

For most people, yes. It sits exactly where a bag stops being decorative and has not yet become luggage, and among clients who own several Birkins it is usually the 30 that shows wear first because it is the one carried.

Is the Birkin 30 easier to find than the 25?

Considerably. It is produced in greater numbers, offered more often in boutiques and appears on the secondary market with far more variety in colour and leather. If you want a specific combination, the 30 is the size you are most likely to find rather than wait for.

Sellier or Retourne in a 30?

Almost all 30s are Retourne, which rounds the corners and softens with wear. Sellier exists and is worth seeing if you want the architectural version, but it is much less common at this size and nearly always Epsom.

Which leather should I choose for a Birkin 30?

Togo for everyday — light for the volume and forgiving. Clémence if you want a decisive slouch. Epsom for structure and the lightest weight. Swift for the deepest colour, accepting it marks. Box calf on older pieces for patina, if you can keep it out of the rain.

Does a Birkin 30 lose its shape?

A Retourne softens and slouches with years of use, and buyers frequently seek exactly that — it is not something a new bag can imitate. What matters when buying pre-owned is the corners, the base and the feet rather than how upright the bag stands in a photograph.
