Noir is the colour Hermès sells most of, and the reason is not caution. Black is the only shade in the palette that changes character entirely depending on the leather it is in — a Noir Box Kelly and a Noir Togo Birkin are two different objects that happen to share a name, and knowing which one you want is most of the decision.
In Box calf, Noir is the classical bag: glassy, formal, catching light along its edges, and it deepens over decades into something no new bag can imitate. In Togo it is quiet and modern, the grain breaking up the surface so the bag reads as texture rather than shine. In Epsom it is architectural and precise. In Swift it is nearly liquid. Hardware matters more against black than against any other shade because the contrast is absolute. Palladium gives a cool, graphic line that makes the bag look contemporary; gold warms it and sends it straight back to the archive photographs. There is no wrong answer, but on Noir the choice is more visible than on Étoupe or Gris, where the metal blends.
The practical argument is real and slightly unfashionable to admit: black hides everything. Scuffs, city dirt, the transfer that ruins pale bags, the mark from a car door — none of it shows the way it does on Craie or Nata. For a bag that will be carried daily through London, Noir in Togo is close to the most sensible purchase in the collection.
It is also the steadiest thing on the secondary market. Black moves in every size, every model and every season, and it does not depend on a colour being in fashion.
