Chanel names its most important bags after dates — the 2.55 for February 1955, the 19 for 2019 — and the 22, introduced under Virginie Viard in 2022, is the newest entry in that lineage. A soft, slouchy hobo built from quilted leather, it was conceived as the anti-flap: unstructured, featherlight, carried like a soft sculpture over the shoulder. This example is the most photogenic of its liveries — white lambskin with gold hardware, the interlocked CC medallion swinging at the base of the drawstring like a piece of jewellery. Few bags photograph better against summer linen or winter black. The diamond quilting reads sharply against white, and the lambskin has the whipped-cream softness that made the material famous. Roomy enough for a laptop and a cardigan yet weightless when empty, the 22 has become the working luxury bag of its generation. It shoulders errands, flights and front rows with the same nonchalance, which is precisely what Viard designed it to do. White with gold is also its scarcest mainstream combination, produced in limited waves and sold through immediately; the configuration commands consistent attention on the secondary market. Lambskin editions in pale shades are the ones collectors move fastest for, since so few survive their first owners in this state.
