Vanilla in matte alligator is one of the rarest neutrals Hermès produces — an off-white with warmth in it, closer to clotted cream than to chalk, and a shade the maison releases only in occasional, tightly allocated exotic runs. On the Mini Kelly II it becomes something close to jewellery: a 20 cm Sellier silhouette in a skin so quiet it reads as texture before it reads as colour. Matte alligator asks more of the atelier than shiny. Without lacquer to mask irregularity, the scales must be matched tile by tile across the flap and body, buffed to a suede-soft finish that deepens slightly with handling rather than shining. Pale skins are less forgiving still — dye take-up across an ivory ground must be perfectly even, which is why Vanilla exotics surface so rarely and command the allocations they do.
