Vanilla in matte alligator is one of the rarest neutrals Hermès produces — an off-white with warmth in it, closer to clotted cream than to chalk, and a shade the maison releases only in occasional, tightly allocated exotic runs. On the Mini Kelly II it becomes something close to jewellery: a 20 cm Sellier silhouette in a skin so quiet it reads as texture before it reads as colour. Matte alligator asks more of the atelier than shiny. Without lacquer to mask irregularity, the scales must be matched tile by tile across the flap and body, buffed to a suede-soft finish that deepens slightly with handling rather than shining. Pale skins are less forgiving still — dye take-up across an ivory ground must be perfectly even, which is why Vanilla exotics surface so rarely and command the allocations they do. Gold hardware warms the palette further: turn-lock, sangles and cadenas glowing against the cream ground. At 20 cm the Mini Kelly holds a phone, a cardholder, keys and a lipstick — carried by the top handle or worn cross-body on the strap. It is the bag for a summer wedding at the Ritz, an evening at Glyndebourne, or simply the finishing note above white linen in Portofino. Few bags photograph as softly, and few pale exotics age as gracefully as matte alligator kept between felt and box.
