Béton is Hermès' concrete — a cool, mineral grey with no warmth in it at all, named for the material and behaving like it. It is the hardest neutral the house makes to wear badly, because it takes on the colour of whatever sits next to it: navy beside a coat, near-white against black, faintly green in daylight. The Kelly Dépêches applies the Kelly's vocabulary to the document case. The turn-lock, the sangles, the plate — the entire front architecture of a Kelly, flattened into a rectangle roughly the size of a folded broadsheet. It is the most direct piece Hermès makes: no gussets, no pockets on the outside, nothing to distract from the proportion of the closure against the panel. Evercolor is the interesting choice here. Softer than Epsom and more matte than Swift, it is a calf leather with a very fine grain and a slightly waxy hand that gives Béton depth without gloss. It ages beautifully — the grey deepens rather than fades — and it is considerably more scratch-resistant than its softness suggests. Palladium hardware is the only correct pairing. Gold against a cool grey fights the tone; the white metal disappears into it, leaving the shape to do the work. Stamped B and store fresh, never carried. The lacquered edges are unmarked, the plate is unscratched beneath its film, and the interior is untouched. Supplied with box and dust bag. Priced at £8,500. Béton appears in the small-leather-goods range only intermittently, and in Evercolor rather than Epsom it is genuinely uncommon — we have handled two in the past year.
