Black Togo is the combination that needs no argument. Togo — the grained calfskin Hermès introduced in 1997 — is the maison's most forgiving hide: supple enough to relax gently at the corners, structured enough to hold the Birkin's profile, and resilient in a way that rewards daily use rather than punishing it. In black the grain reads as texture rather than colour, which is precisely why the pairing has outlasted every seasonal palette Hermès has issued alongside it. At 25 centimetres the Birkin is at its most disciplined. It carries a phone, a card case, keys and a compact, and very little else — which is rather the point. The size obliges the bag to behave as an accessory rather than a container, and it is the reason the 25 has overtaken the 30 and the 35 in demand across the past decade. In black Togo it becomes the rarest thing in a wardrobe: an object that is the most conspicuous piece in the room and entirely appropriate everywhere. Palladium is the quieter of the two hardware finishes. Against black leather it draws a cool, silvered line along the sangles, turn-lock, clochette and cadenas, keeping the bag graphic where gold would make it ornamental.
