The Kelly Cut arrived in the mid-2000s as the evening answer to a question the Kelly had been asked for fifty years: what do you carry when you do not want to carry a bag? It measures roughly 31 centimetres across, 13 tall and 4 deep — the width of a Kelly 32 flattened to the thickness of a hardback — and it has no handle and no strap. The closure is the Kelly's own: two leather straps drawn through the plaque and turned shut with the touret. Everything that makes a Kelly read as a Kelly from across a room is present; everything that makes it a handbag has been cut away, which is where the name comes from.

It is a clutch in the strict sense, so it is worth being honest about what goes inside. A phone, even the largest, lies flat. A card case, a lipstick, keys, a folded envelope and a pair of slim sunglasses fit alongside it. A full wallet does not, and neither does anything that needs to stand upright. Owners who use theirs most are the ones who accepted that on day one: it is the bag for dinner, the wedding, the opening and the evening that follows a working day, carried under the arm with the plaque facing out.

Leather decides the character more than on any other Kelly, because there is so much flat surface to show it. Epsom is the structured choice — it holds the envelope perfectly crisp and shrugs off the marks a clutch collects — and Swift is the soft one, with the deepest colour and a slight give under the hand. Box calf gives the vintage-Kelly shine and will show its history; Chèvre has a fine grain with a sheen that reads well in evening light. Doblis, the suede, is the one that has been asked for most this year: it is beautiful, it is unforgiving of rain and rings, and it should be bought by someone who knows that. In exotics the Cut is where lizard makes most sense — the small scales suit the small surface — and ostrich, alligator and Porosus crocodile give it a presence out of proportion to its size.

The obvious comparison is the Kelly Pochette, and the two are not interchangeable. The Pochette is 22 centimetres wide with a top handle and a deeper body; it is a small bag that can be carried like one. The Cut is nine centimetres longer, half as deep and handle-less; it is held, tucked or laid on a table. If you want something to hang from your wrist while you hold a glass, the Pochette. If you want the long, flat line that sits under a jacket without a bulge, the Cut. The Kelly To Go, for what it is worth, is neither — it is a wallet with a strap, and it is the one to choose if you need to be hands-free.

Because a Cut is handled rather than carried, the wear pattern is its own. The four corners of the envelope are the first place to look, then the edge paint along the long bottom seam, then the leather immediately behind the plaque where the straps rub. On a Doblis piece we check the nap for flattening and any darkening from hand oils; on Box, for the fine surface scratches that are normal and the deep ones that are not. Inside, the date stamp gives the year, and we photograph it. Every Cut we list has been through that inspection in our London workroom before it is priced, and the condition line on the page says plainly whether it is new, unworn or pre-owned, and what that means for the piece in front of you.

Colour is where the Cut earns its keep. Because it is small and it is carried against clothing rather than beside it, most clients allow it more colour than they would a Kelly 28: Rouge H and Rouge Casaque, a Bleu Saphir or Bleu Électrique, a Vert Cyprès, a Rose Azalée. Black in Epsom with palladium is the one that is always asked for and always leaves first; Gold and Étoupe follow it. The exotic pieces tend to be bought in a single colour with a single purpose in mind — a wedding, a particular dress — and those are the ones we are most often asked to source rather than the ones we happen to hold.

What we see in the market this year is that the Cut has moved from an afterthought in a Kelly collection to a first purchase for clients who want the house's most recognisable hardware without committing to a bag they will carry every day. Exotic Cuts sell fastest; Doblis has had a season; Epsom in a neutral is the one that never sits long. Hermès offers the model sparingly and it is not on the shelf in the boutique when you walk in, which is the practical reason a specialist's stock matters.
