The Kelly To Go began life as a wallet. Hermès took the Kelly Classique — the long wallet with the miniature Kelly closure that has sat in the leather goods cabinet for years — and gave it a slim, detachable strap. The result is a bag in everything but name: a structured Sellier body around 20 cm wide and 12 cm tall, barely 2 cm deep, closed with the same turn-lock, straps and padlock as a full-size Kelly. It is the House's answer to the wallet-on-strap that every other maison has sold for a decade, done the Hermès way — saddle-stitched, with the Kelly's hardware scaled down rather than simplified.

What makes it scarce is not a quota. The Kelly To Go does not count as one of the rationed bags, which is precisely why it has become the Kelly a client can actually be offered once the year's Birkin or Kelly allocation is spent — and why it disappears the same afternoon. Production is small, the leather goods counter receives a handful at a time, and most are spoken for before they are unwrapped. In London it is rarer to see one in a boutique than a Kelly 25. Clients who want a specific colour and hardware combination generally end up finding it on the secondary market, where the choice is wider than any boutique's on any given day.

Inside, it keeps the wallet's logic. Card slots run down both walls, there are two flat compartments long enough for notes, and a zipped pocket sits between them for coins or a key. The central section takes a phone. That is the whole point: the Kelly To Go replaces a wallet and a small bag at once, so an evening or a lunch needs nothing else. A phone in a slim case, four or five cards, a lipstick and a folded twenty is a full load; it is not a bag for a second phone or a bunch of keys, and it holds its line best when it is not overfilled.

Epsom is the leather most Kelly To Go are made in, and the one that suits the design best. It is an embossed calf with a fine, regular grain, stiff enough to hold the Sellier edges razor-sharp, light in the hand, and forgiving of scratches — a fingernail mark on Epsom can usually be rubbed away. Chèvre Mysore, the goat leather, is the other regular choice: a tighter, slightly iridescent grain with a faint sheen, lighter still than Epsom, and more resistant to scuffing. Chèvre pieces are fewer, and collectors tend to prefer them. Swift and exotic versions exist in very small numbers.

Black with palladium is the daily version, and the one most clients buy first; black with gold hardware reads a shade more formal. Craie, the chalk white, is the light alternative, and it lives well in Epsom because Epsom wipes clean. Then come the seasonal colours the House rotates through — Mauve Sylvestre, a dusty violet; Rose Texas, a clear pink; Gris Patine; and Argent, a metallic silver Hermès uses sparingly and mostly on small pieces, which turns the Kelly To Go into an evening object outright. Colour on a piece this small is a decision about what it will sit against; a black one disappears into an outfit, a Mauve or an Argent is the outfit.

The strap is a single slim length of the same leather, detachable at both ends. Worn on the shoulder it sits at the hip; worn across the body it rests on the front of the hip on most frames, which is how most people end up carrying it. Unclip the strap and it is a clutch, and a wallet again inside a larger bag — the reason more than one client keeps a Kelly To Go inside a Birkin 30 and takes only the smaller piece out to dinner. Strap drops differ slightly between pieces; we measure the one you are considering and tell you before you commit.
