Gold is the colour the House was wearing before it was a fashion house. It is the tan of a new saddle, warmer than camel and shallower than cognac, and Hermès has kept it in permanent production for decades while seasonal browns have come and gone. Gold is not Fauve: Fauve is the natural, untreated Barenia saddle leather, deeper and redder, which darkens dramatically with sun and hands. Gold is not Etoupe, the grey-beige that has become the House's other everyday neutral, nor Sésame, which is paler and sandier, nor Alezan, the chestnut. Gold is the tan with the white stitching, and if the stitching is tone on tone, whatever you are looking at is a different colour.
