Black shows leather more than any other colour, so choosing a black Birkin is really choosing a texture. Epsom is embossed rather than natural grain: crisper, lighter, easy to wipe, and the leather that keeps the corners and the top line sharp for a decade. Swift is smooth and drinks colour, so a black Swift is the deepest black of all, at the cost of showing marks sooner. Clémence, the heavier, slouchier calf, is rarely made in 25 because the small body does not need the weight.

Hardware is the second decision, and on black it is a bigger one than on any other colour. Gold hardware on black is the classic pairing — warm against the cold, the version that reads as evening and as heirloom. Palladium is cooler and more modern, sits happily beside a steel watch, and shows fewer scratches over time because there is no plating to wear through to a base colour. The Birkin 25 comes in two constructions, and in black both are made. Retourné — the original — is stitched inside out and turned, so the edges are rounded and the body has a little give; it is the softer, more familiar shape. Sellier, a more recent addition to the Birkin line, is stitched on the outside with the edges exposed and painted, which gives a boxier, more architectural bag with a visible seam. Epsom is the Sellier's natural leather and the pairing you will see in this gallery; Togo is the Retourné's. Put them side by side and the difference is immediate; on paper it is easy to miss.

Then there are the exotics. A black Birkin 25 in matte alligator has a quiet, almost velvet surface with the scales reading as texture rather than shine; in shiny alligator or Porosus crocodile it is glossy and unmistakable. The symbol beside the blind stamp tells you which: a square for alligator, a caret for Niloticus crocodile, two dots for Porosus.
