Black Hermès Mini Kelly · London

The black Mini Kelly — the Kelly 20 Sellier II in Noir — is the bag people fly to Paris for and come home without. Twenty centimetres of saddle-stitched Epsom, Chèvre, Box or alligator with the full Kelly closure and a strap long enough to wear across the body, it is the most photographed small bag of its generation and the one boutiques ration hardest. We hold the largest selection of Mini Kellys in London, and the black ones are below: gold and palladium hardware, Clouté and special-order pieces among them, each inspected by hand and shown by appointment.

If there is one bag a London boutique will not have for you, it is a black Mini Kelly. The Kelly 20 Sellier II is made in smaller numbers than any other Kelly, black is the colour everyone asks for first, and the two facts together mean the bag is spoken for long before it arrives. Clients with years of purchase history wait for it; clients without are politely not told when it comes in. We built this gallery because we are asked for a black Mini Kelly more than for any other single piece, and because we usually have a dozen of them.

The Mini Kelly in production today is the second version. The original Mini Kelly, made until the late 2010s, was a 20 cm piece with a short strap for the shoulder; the Mini Kelly II that replaced it is a fraction slimmer, strictly Sellier, and comes with a strap long enough to wear across the body, which is what turned it from a curiosity into the most wanted bag of the last decade. Vintage first-generation pieces in black do appear and are collected; the pieces in this gallery are, unless stated, the current Sellier II.

Epsom is the leather the black Mini Kelly is most often made in, and the most practical: embossed, crisp, light, scratch-forgiving and easy to wipe, holding the Sellier edges as sharp on the fifth year as on the first. Chèvre Mysore — goat — is the connoisseur's alternative, a tight, slightly iridescent grain with a faint sheen that is lighter and tougher than Epsom and made in far smaller numbers. Box calf is the leather the Kelly was born in: smooth, glossy, and inclined to show its life, which is why a black Box Mini Kelly is both rare and beautiful and needs a careful owner. Swift appears now and then. All four are in black here at different times.

Then the exotics. Matte alligator in black has a soft, almost velvet surface; shiny alligator and shiny Porosus crocodile are polished until the scales reflect light like lacquer; lizard is a fine, tiny scale that reads as texture from a distance. On a bag this size an exotic skin is used almost whole, so the scale pattern matters — a centred, symmetrical pattern is what the ateliers aim for and what you should look for. The symbol beside the blind stamp identifies the species, and every exotic piece here travels with its CITES documentation.

Hardware on a black Mini Kelly divides opinion cleanly. Gold hardware is the version that photographs, the warm-on-cold pairing that reads as evening. Palladium is quieter, cooler, matches steel and white gold, and wears better because there is nothing to wear through. Beyond the two standard finishes the House has made the Mini Kelly Clouté, studded with palladium cabochons along the edges, and the Clou de Coeur, its heart-studded cousin; both are in this gallery from time to time and both are made in tiny numbers. Neither is a bag for hiding.

Some of the black Mini Kellys we handle carry a horseshoe beside the blind stamp. That is the mark of a special order — a bag a client with a long history was invited to configure at a leather appointment — and it usually means a contrasting interior or a second colour: Noir outside and Bleu Indigo or Bordeaux inside, a Verso, is the classic. A special-order piece is a one-off by definition, and it is the way to own a black Mini Kelly that is also unmistakably yours. When we have one, the description says exactly what was ordered.

At roughly 20 by 12 by 6 centimetres the Mini Kelly takes a phone, a card holder, a lipstick and keys, and no more; the largest phones fit but fill it. The strap is slim and detachable, long enough for the shoulder or across the body, and the bag is just as often carried by its top handle. It is not a day bag for someone who carries a day's worth of things. It is the bag for the evening, the wedding, the dinner, and the afternoon when you have decided to carry nothing — which, for most of the people who buy one, is most afternoons.

Every black Mini Kelly here has been inspected by hand — corners, the turn-lock and straps, the interior flat pocket, the plating, the stamp — and photographed in daylight. Store-fresh pieces arrive unworn with the film on the hardware; pre-owned pieces are described exactly. View any of them by appointment in London, or have one delivered insured, next day, anywhere in the UK. Against its neighbours: the black Kelly 25 is the same bag with room for a day; the Kelly Pochette is the clutch; the Mini Constance is the shoulder alternative with the H clasp. All are in stock, and all are better decided in person.

Questions, answered

Is the black Mini Kelly a quota bag?

Yes, as clients and the trade consistently report: the Mini Kelly counts as one of the two rationed bags a boutique will offer a client in a year, alongside the Birkin, the larger Kellys and the Constance. That is the main reason the black one is so difficult to be offered and why most change hands on the secondary market.

Epsom, Chèvre or Box for a black Mini Kelly?

Epsom is the standard and the most practical: light, crisp, scratch-forgiving and easy to wipe. Chèvre Mysore is lighter and tougher still, with a fine iridescent grain, and is made in smaller numbers. Box calf is the original glossy Kelly leather, the most beautiful in black and the most demanding to keep. For daily use choose Epsom; for the collection, Chèvre or Box.

Gold or palladium hardware on a black Mini Kelly?

Gold hardware on black is the classic, warmer pairing that photographs best; palladium is cooler, more discreet and wears better over the years. Both are in stock. Pick the one that matches the jewellery you actually wear.

What fits in a Mini Kelly?

A phone, a card holder, a lipstick and keys. The largest phones fit but fill it. It is an evening and occasion bag, worn on the shoulder, across the body or carried by the handle, not a day bag.

What does the horseshoe stamp on a Mini Kelly mean?

A horseshoe beside the blind stamp marks a special order: a bag a client was invited to configure, usually with a contrasting interior or a second colour. Such pieces are one-offs. When we have a special-order black Mini Kelly the description states exactly what was ordered.

Can I see a black Mini Kelly in London before buying?

Yes. Every piece here can be viewed by appointment in London with the alternatives beside it. Elsewhere in the UK, delivery is insured and next day; internationally we ship with full documentation, exotic pieces with their CITES papers.
