Gold is the colour that made the Birkin legible to the world. Warm and tannic, faintly reddened in strong light, it is the shade Hermès has never had to reinvent — and against palladium it becomes cooler and more contemporary than the familiar gold-on-gold pairing. Epsom sharpens it further. Where Togo swells and softens with wear, Epsom is a pressed, fine-grained calfskin that holds a drawn line indefinitely. Corners stay square, the flap falls flat, and the bag arrives at its tenth year looking much as it did at its first. It is also the lightest of the everyday leathers and the least anxious about rain, fingerprints and the general friction of being carried. At twenty-five centimetres this is the Birkin at its most disciplined. A phone, a card case, keys, a compact — the size refuses to become a container, and that refusal is precisely why the 25 has outrun the 30 and the 35 in demand across the past decade.
