The Kelly Cut carries the Kelly's architecture — the turn-lock, the belted straps, the saddle stitching along the flap — without the handle, the gusset or the structure that lets a full Kelly stand on its own. Flattened into an envelope clutch only a little over a decade after Hermès introduced the format, the Cut reads as a modern silhouette built on a nineteenth-century frame: every detail a full-size Kelly carries is still there, simply folded down to fit under one arm. Jaune Milton sits among the sharper yellows in the current Hermès palette — brighter and cooler than Jaune de Naples, with enough green underneath to stop it reading as a plain primary yellow under indoor light. It is not a colour built to sit quietly on a shelf, which suits a clutch that is meant to be noticed the moment it is carried rather than opened. Swift does the colour justice. It is the thinnest and most supple of the smooth Hermès calfskins, without the grain of Togo or the structure of Epsom, so a saturated dye sits close to the surface and reads as pure pigment rather than something absorbed into texture. On a flat silhouette like the Cut, where there is no gusset to interrupt the leather, that evenness matters more than it would on a structured bag — any unevenness in the tannage would show across the whole flap at once. This example carries blind stamp W and comes with its original receipt. Swift rewards being kept out of direct sun, which matters more for a saturated colour than a neutral one, since pigment sitting on an aniline-style finish is the first thing to shift with light.
