Casaque is Hermès at its most confident: a tricolour Kelly built from panels of Rouge Sellier and Blue Indigo, opened by a lining of Rose Texas that shows itself only when the flap is lifted. The name comes from racing silks, and the logic is the same — flat blocks of saturated colour, no gradient, no ornament, the contrast doing all the work. Casaque pieces are made in small numbers and almost never repeat in the same combination, which is why they tend to leave the boutique before they are ever listed. The 28 is the size that carries the idea best. Large enough for the colour blocking to read clearly across the front panel and the sangles, small enough to stay an evening bag when it wants to be. Epsom is the right leather for the job: fine-grained, firm and precisely embossed, it holds each shade at full strength and keeps the trapeze structure crisp, corners square and flap flat through years of use. Palladium hardware cools the whole composition. Against Rouge Sellier the white metal reads modern rather than ceremonial, and the turn-key, clochette and padlock stay bright without competing with the leather.
