A Birkin 30 in a two-leather combination — Grizzly on the body, Swift on the contrast panels — finished in Capucine and Gold with palladium hardware. The pairing is considered and precise, its effect immediate without being loud. Square R stamp, unworn condition. At thirty centimetres, the Birkin occupies the position most people mean when they picture one: substantial enough to carry a day's essentials without concession, compact enough to move with the wearer rather than behind her. It is the size that works from a morning meeting through to dinner, that photographs small but in the hand feels entirely right. Hermès has built this model since 1984, and the thirty remains the one collectors come back to. Capucine is Hermès's word for a shade of orange that sits closer to a clear tomato than to the softer tangerine of some earlier house oranges — vivid, warm, and more precise than the name of the nasturtium flower it borrows from might suggest. Gold, here, is a deep honey-amber, and the contrast it forms against Capucine on the panels is clean rather than showy. Grizzly — a grained, matte calf — holds Capucine at a lower register of saturation, grounding the colour. The Swift panels read the same shade but brighter, the smoother surface catching more light. The difference between the two is subtle in photographs and obvious in person. The palladium hardware reads cool and silver against the warm tones of the leathers, a considered counterpoint. This piece was inspected by hand in our London workroom and verified with Entrupy; it is available to view by appointment at our Chelsea Harbour showroom.
