Martin Margiela's brief tenure at Hermès produced few designs, but the Herbag — his 1998 idea of a Kelly for everyday life, in toile and leather — may be the most loved of them. It reverses the house's usual arithmetic: rather than precious materials in a casual shape, it offers a casual material in the most precious shape Hermès owns. The result has quietly outlived nearly every it-bag of its generation. This Herbag 31 pairs a beige toile body with Bordeaux leather at the flap, handle and base — wine poured over sand, a warm combination with an unmistakably Provençal ease. Palladium hardware, from the touret closure to the fittings, keeps the piece bright and modern. The 31 carries a full day generously — canvas keeps it light even loaded — and the profile stays unmistakably Kelly from across any street. It is the bag for farmers' markets and first-class lounges alike, and it asks to be carried in weather that would ground its leather siblings. Bordeaux leather is a comparatively rare Herbag trim, warmer than black, more forgiving than gold, and particularly handsome as it burnishes with use. Colourways like this appear for a season and retire, and the secondary market absorbs them quickly; Herbags have become the sleeper collectable of the house's canvas lines.
