When the Herbag appeared in 1998, it did something quietly radical: it rebuilt the Kelly's famous profile in military-grade toile and bridle leather, making the house's most patrician silhouette available for everyday campaigning. This is the original spirit of Hermès — canvas and saddlery — the very pairing on which the maison's travel trunks and haversacks were built a century earlier. This Herbag 31 arrives in the most masculine of its liveries: black canvas beneath a deep brown leather flap and fittings. The contrast is tobacco on ink, a combination that flatters denim, tweed and tailoring alike and hides the marks of a working week better than any pale toile. It is the Herbag that works as well on a man's shoulder as a woman's. The 31 is the everyday size — Kelly proportions, weekday temperament — closed with the same sculpted touret the formal bag wears. The clever conceit of the original design, a leather head that could take interchangeable canvas bodies, made it the connoisseur's utility Hermès from the start. As earlier-generation Herbags leave circulation, examples with honest character have become genuinely collectable, loved precisely because they are meant to be used without ceremony. Our example is preloved and blind stamped D, presented in good condition: the canvas sound and true, the leather flap deepened by age in the way brown bridle leather is supposed to. It has been inspected and authenticated by our specialists.
