The Heure H is the most literal object Hermès makes. Philippe Mouquet drew it in 1996 by taking the house's initial and using it as the case: the two uprights of the H become the lugs the strap passes through, the crossbar becomes the bezel around the dial. There is no logo applied anywhere on the outside, because the watch is the logo. Thirty years on it is still in production essentially unchanged, which is the usual sign that a design was right the first time. This is the XS, the smallest of the four sizes, at 21 × 21 mm. It is a bracelet-watch rather than a wristwatch in the technical sense — the point is the proportion, a small gold rectangle sitting on a narrow strap, worn stacked with a CDC or a Chaîne d'Ancre or on its own. The case is gold-plated steel, warm rather than brassy, and the dial is the classic white lacquer with the tilted Arabic numerals Hermès uses across the line, a layout kept deliberately uncluttered. The movement is quartz, as the enclosed instruction booklet confirms. The strap is black Epsom — the same pressed, fine-grained calf used on the bags — on the standard Hermès quick-change system, so it can be swapped for any of the other single-tour or double-tour straps in the size without a tool or a trip to the boutique. Full set: the watch, its orange box and inner cushion, the certificate and the quartz instruction booklet, all present as shown. Store fresh and unworn. Sourced below the boutique price. Available to view at our Chelsea Harbour showroom or delivered insured anywhere in the UK. Ask us for a wrist shot or a short video if you would like to judge the scale before you decide.
