Buying Hermès Abroad vs in the UK: VAT, Duty and What You Actually Save (2026)

The sticker maths

Hermès retail is genuinely cheaper in Paris than in London for many pieces, and as a non-EU resident a UK buyer can reclaim part of the French VAT on export. We compared the cities properly in London vs Paris vs Dubai. On paper, the saving on a mid-four-figure piece looks like a free flight.

What the theory forgets: the UK border

Since the end of tax-free shopping, goods brought into Great Britain above the personal allowance — 390 pounds for most travellers — are liable to UK import VAT at 20% on the full value, and customs duty can apply on top. Declare a Paris bag honestly and the reclaimed French VAT is largely replaced by British VAT; the glamorous saving shrinks toward zero. Not declaring is smuggling — penalties, seizure of the bag, and for a five-figure piece a risk out of all proportion to the saving. We do not recommend it, full stop.

What the theory really forgets: allocation

The deeper flaw is availability. The Paris flagships are the most oversubscribed Hermès counters on earth — appointment lotteries, days of queueing, and the same quota system as everywhere: Birkins and Kellys go to established clients, not to visitors with a boarding pass. Tourists fly home with silk and tableware. The bag in the fantasy was never on the shelf.

When buying abroad does make sense

For non-quota pieces you can actually buy — scarves, jewellery, shoes, some leather goods — and for travellers already going, the Paris trip remains a pleasure with a modest real saving on smaller items under or near the allowance. For the icons, it is theatre.

The UK alternative, priced in plain sight

On byjull.com the bag exists, today, with no border in the way: UK stock, UK company, prices that are final — no import VAT surprise, no duty, no declaration forms. Birkins from around 16,500 pounds, Kellys from 17,800, each authenticated in-house and photographed as the exact item. Reserve with a 20% deposit, settle by bank transfer or pay-by-bank link, and it is at your door insured, typically next working day.

Frequently asked questions

At retail, the sticker is lower — but a visitor cannot simply buy one, and after UK import VAT on an honest declaration the saving largely disappears.

The personal goods allowance is 390 pounds for most travellers arriving by air. Above it, import VAT applies to the full value, not just the excess.

Partially, via the detaxe scheme on export — but you then owe UK VAT on arrival, which is the part of the equation the airport anecdotes leave out.

Different sales taxes, same two constants: the allocation wall at the boutique and the UK border on the way home. The full city comparison is in our price study.
