The piece in detail

Avalon is the blanket Hermès made for horses before it made it for people. The original was a cab blanket — the rug thrown over a carriage horse at rest — and the pattern is the H repeated at the four corners of a check, drawn large enough to read from across a stable yard. Avalon III is the studio's reworking of it as a graphic checkerboard: the H holds the corners, and the field between them becomes a grid of squares in three tones. This is the pillow in the small model, 52 × 52 cm, in Écru / Gris Clair. The cover is jacquard-woven in 90% merino wool and 10% cashmere and woven in Great Britain, which is where the house has always had this cloth made. Because it is jacquard rather than printed, the pattern exists in the weave and the reverse is the negative of the front — the écru squares become grey and the grey become écru — so the cushion reads differently depending on which way it is turned. The edge is finished with a hand-worked blanket stitch in grey, the detail that stops it looking like a cushion and makes it look like a folded blanket. The cover is removable, over a polyester insert. Practically, this is the easiest Hermès object to live with. Grey and écru sit on a linen sofa, a leather chair or a bed without any decorating decision being made, the wool takes sitting on and recovers, and at 52 cm it is the size that works as a pair on a three-seater or singly on an armchair.
