Few houses would dare render their most formal bag in shearling; Hermès did precisely that with the Mini Kelly Teddy, wrapping the silhouette that Grace Kelly carried into legend in soft, brushed fleece. The result is one of the maison's most quietly witty creations — couture tailoring in the language of a winter coat. This example comes in Gold, the house's signature tan, here rendered warmer and deeper by the nap of the shearling, which shifts tone as the pile catches the light. Palladium hardware cools the palette beautifully, its bright touret and strap fittings standing crisp against the honeyed fleece. At twenty centimetres, the Mini Kelly II is the proportion collectors fight hardest for; carried by hand, worn crossbody or tucked under the arm, it moves from daytime errands to evening with no change of register. It is also the rare winter bag that photographs like jewellery, which explains its grip on the collector imagination since the first Teddy pieces surfaced.
