A Kelly 20 in matte alligator, black, with gold hardware — a combination that sits at the top of what the house produces in exotic leathers. G stamp, brand new condition. Few formats in Hermès's history carry the weight that the Kelly does. Designed originally as a structured holdall, the silhouette has evolved into the house's most formally considered bag: a piece that moves between the professional and the ceremonial, that suits a lunch equally with an evening, and that asks to be carried rather than thrown. The 20 is the smallest iteration, which focuses the bag inward — it becomes jewellery as much as luggage, carried at the hand or tucked under the arm. Black matte alligator reads as something close to lacquer in strong light, but retains depth where a polished skin would simply reflect. The individual scales are visible as texture rather than pattern, each one absorbing light differently depending on the angle.
