Chanel's habit of naming bags for their birth year has given the world the 2.55, the 19 and the 22; the 25 is the latest addition, and it arrived already famous. Conceived as a soft, gathered shoulder bag for the house's second century, it was the immediate object of waiting lists from its first season. This example comes in the edition that caused the most conversation: washed blue denim, quilted in the house's diamond matelassé and finished with gold hardware. Denim has been part of the Chanel vocabulary since Karl Lagerfeld sent it down couture runways decades ago — the fabric of workwear elevated with a straight face.
