The piece in detail

The contrast toe cap is the oldest idea in the Chanel shoe wardrobe. Gabrielle Chanel put it on a slingback in 1957 for a practical reason — a darker tip visually shortens the foot and hides the scuffing that a pale shoe collects first — and the house has been reworking it ever since. On the ballerina it does something else as well: it draws the eye to the point of the toe and makes a flat shoe read as deliberate rather than as a shoe you put on because you were tired of heels. This pair is in a deep burgundy patent calfskin embossed with a crocodile grain. The combination is unusual and it is the reason to buy these over the plain black pair: the embossing breaks the light into small facets instead of one hard shine, so the red reads as wine rather than as plastic, and the shoe keeps the gloss of patent without the flatness of it. The toe cap is plain black patent with the interlocking CC stitched into it, the binding and the small bow at the throat are burgundy grosgrain, and the lining is black leather with the gold CHANEL stamp at the heel. Underneath is a black leather sole with the CC medallion, MADE IN ITALY, and the size stamped 39 C — 39 in the European size, C being the wider of Chanel's two fittings. The ballerina is cut close through the toe box; if you are between sizes, most people take the larger. Store fresh and unworn, with the shoe trees and the tissue as they came, soles unmarked.
