The Vanity is the most quietly useful bag Chanel makes. Descended from the cosmetic cases the house sold alongside its fragrances in the 1960s, it has been reworked as a small structured box with a chain strap — the practicality of a train case with none of its bulk. This example is finished in black crocodile-embossed calfskin, a treatment Chanel reserves for a handful of pieces each season, and it changes the character of the bag completely: the raised scale pattern catches light across the flat panels and gives the little box a presence far beyond its size. Gold-tone hardware is the correct pairing. The chain, the interlocking CC turnlock and the top handle all read warm against black, and the embossing keeps the metal from looking too polite. Structure is the other argument for this model — the sides hold their shape whether the bag is full or empty, so it never sags on the shoulder or collapses on a table. Inside, the Vanity does what the classic flap cannot: it opens flat and stays open.
