The piece in detail

A three-tone Bolide in Bleu Thalassa, Vert Foncé and Nata, new and never carried. Stamp A, new and never carried. The Bolide holds a particular position in the Hermès canon: it predates the Kelly by several years and is widely considered the first modern zip-fastened handbag. Where other Hermès silhouettes have accrued ceremony — the ritual of the turn-lock, the theatre of the sangles — the Bolide is resolved and immediate. A single zip runs the full width of the opening; the structure is firm without being rigid. It sits equally well as a carried piece or beneath the arm, and it moves between a desk and an evening table without announcement. Those who reach for it tend to prefer function that does not draw attention to itself. Bleu Thalassa takes its name from the Greek word for sea, and in practice it reads as a considered mid-depth blue — neither the cool remove of Bleu Indigo nor the brightness of Bleu Zanzibar, but something that holds light without dominating it. Vert Foncé is a deep forest green, and against the blue it reads as shadow rather than contrast. Nata — a warm, barely-there ivory — brings both tones forward and gives the composition its breath. On the leather, all three colours have the kind of depth that comes only with age and original quality. The hardware is gilt.
