The piece in detail

The Chypre is the sandal Hermès built around the Oran's H, with everything the Oran leaves out: a closed quarter, an adjustable heel strap, and a moulded sole with a real tread. It reads as the same shoe from above — the single wide band cut into the H, the two open notches at the sides — but it stays on the foot when you walk properly in it, which is why it has become the one men actually buy. This pair is size 43 in navy Epsom. Epsom is the pressed, fine-grained calf Hermès uses where a piece needs to hold its shape: it is rigid rather than slouchy, it resists scuffs and water marks better than a soft grain, and it wipes clean — the sensible choice on a shoe that gets worn on a terrace, a boat or a hot pavement. The navy is deep enough to pass for black at a distance and to sit under a linen trouser or a pair of jeans without a second thought, and the grain catches the light just enough to show that it is not. The strap fastens at the outside heel and adjusts, so the fit can be set once and left. The footbed is anatomically moulded with the HERMÈS stamp at the heel, and the outsole carries a chevron tread, marked HERMÈS MADE IN ITALY. A 43 corresponds to a UK 9; the Chypre is cut on a straight, roomy last and the adjustable strap absorbs most of the difference if your foot sits between sizes.
