In the late 1930s Robert Dumas, watching ships at anchor, drew the chaîne d'ancre — the anchor-chain link that became Hermès jewellery's defining motif. The Maillon To Go carries that drawing into leather goods: maillon means link, and a single bold chaîne d'ancre link forms the clasp of this slim wallet-on-strap. It is the rare small piece with a signature you can read across a room without a logo in sight. This edition takes the idea to its most graphic conclusion — black Epsom leather with the link finished in black lacquer, an exercise in monochrome that reads as modern jewellery design. Lacquered hardware is among the house's most unusual finishes, glossy where metal would gleam, and it turns the clasp into something closer to sculpture than fastening. Epsom's pressed grain holds the flat, elongated silhouette perfectly crisp and takes black with a deep, even matte that flatters the lacquer's shine. Worn crossbody, the piece carries the essentials — phone, cards, keys — while presenting one uninterrupted line of black. All-black Hermès has a particular constituency — architects, editors, collectors of the discreet — and this piece was designed almost privately for them. It is evening-ready by construction and office-appropriate by restraint. The Maillon To Go appears in small seasonal allocations only; it has never been a permanent catalogue fixture, and lacquer editions are the scarcest of them. Pieces that fuse the maison's jewellery heritage with its leather craft tend to become collector's chapters — this one already is. Ours is store fresh with the blind stamp W, flawless to the edge of the lacquer. It has been authenticated by our in-house specialists. View it at our Knightsbridge showroom by appointment, or let our personal shoppers reserve it and arrange worldwide insured delivery.
