Mauve Sylvestre is the mauve Hermès arrives at after decades of circling the shade — cooler than Rose Sakura, softer than Violet, with a grey undertone that stops it short of sweetness. In Epsom it reads as a considered colour rather than a pretty one, and that restraint is why this piece tends to leave the room before the black one does. The Mini Kelly II is the format that made the colour matter. At twenty centimetres it holds a phone, a card case and a lipstick and nothing else, which is precisely the point: the bag is worn rather than carried, on a shoulder strap that reduces it to a piece of jewellery with a lock. Hermès produces it in numbers that have never met demand, and Epsom minis in pastel tones are allocated rather than sold. Palladium is the correct pairing here. The white metal keeps the mauve clean and slightly cold, holding the grey in the pigment where gold would warm it into pink. Epsom's pressed grain does the rest — it takes colour flatter and truer than Togo, resists the softening that turns pale leathers cloudy, and keeps the corners square through years of use. The structure is upright, the turn-lock tight, the strap unmarked, the interior unscented and clean. Priced at £27,500.
