The piece in detail

Pierre Hardy drew the Oran for Hermès in 1997 and it has not been redesigned since: a flat leather slide, square at the toe, with a single wide band across the foot cut into the shape of the H. Everything else was removed. There is no buckle, no strap, no logo stamped on the outside — the fastening and the branding are the same piece of leather, and the shoe is recognisable across a room to people who could not name another sandal. This pair is a 39 in a deep wine calfskin, smooth-finished rather than grained, so it takes the light along the curve of the band and reads almost black in shadow and clearly red in sun. It is an easier colour to wear than it sounds: it sits with navy, camel, cream and denim in a way a bright red does not, and it takes the summer wardrobe into September. Underneath is a leather sole — semelle cuir, stamped HERMÈS 39, made in Italy — with a thin leather-covered heel. A leather sole is the reason an Oran looks the way it does, flat and precise with no rubber lip, and it is also the one thing to be deliberate about: it is made for pavements, terraces and interiors rather than for wet stone, and a cobbler can add a thin protective sole in ten minutes if you would rather not think about it. Store fresh and unworn, soles unmarked. Hermès sandals are cut narrow and true to size; if you normally take a 39 and have a broader foot, the Oran is the model most people size up in.
