Among the quieter revelations of the Hermès repertoire, the Sabot occupies a category entirely its own. Named for the wooden clog it evokes, it is built as a tapering cone — narrow at the shoulder, widening to a generous oval base — and crowned by a rigid arched handle held in place by two polished fittings. The silhouette owes nothing to the Birkin or the Kelly, and everything to the saddlery workshop from which the house began. This example arrives in naturel sable and fauve calfskin, the warm honeyed tan that has become shorthand for Hermès and its equestrian origins. The leather is smooth and close-grained, cut so that the seam falls cleanly down the back and the saddle stitching frames the base in a single unbroken line. Hunter cowhide lends the body its structure, giving the cone an architectural hold: this is a bag that stands unaided on a table, never slumping, never asking to be propped. Palladium hardware supplies the counterpoint — cool, bright and restrained against the depth of the tan. The blind stamp reads W, and the piece is accompanied by its original receipt, box and dust bag. The Sabot is not a bag for those seeking recognition at fifty paces. It is for the collector who already owns the classics and now wants something that rewards a second look: an object closer to sculpture than to accessory, compact enough to carry by hand through an evening, distinctive enough to be remembered long afterwards. Few reach the secondary market in this condition, and fewer still in a colourway this versatile. Priced at £7,500.
