The piece in detail

Few Hermès commissions announce themselves as confidently as a Birkin 30 cut from shiny Niloticus crocodile, and fewer still arrive in Geranium. This is a red with backbone — deeper than a coral, warmer than a true scarlet, carrying the faint blue undertone that keeps it from ever reading as orange. Laid over the glassy, hand-polished surface of Niloticus, the colour gains a second life: each scale catches the light at its own angle, so the bag shifts from a burnished garnet in shadow to a clear, lacquered red in full daylight. The thirty centimetre silhouette remains the most quietly practical of the Birkin family. It takes a slim laptop, a folded scarf and the ordinary contents of a working day without losing the taut, architectural line that defines the model. Palladium hardware is the right partner here — cool, bright and unyielding, it holds the warmth of the Geranium in check rather than amplifying it, and keeps the whole object closer to jewellery than to luggage. Niloticus crocodile is graded long before it reaches an atelier, and the tight, even scale pattern running across this front panel is the reason pieces like it are quoted rather than stocked. The square Q blind stamp places the bag in recent production, and it comes to us store fresh: crisp corners, unmarked feet, protective film intact on the plaques, with clochette, lock and keys all present. Exotic Birkins in this configuration rarely sit still. Boutique allocation for shiny Niloticus is negligible, and Geranium in particular tends to surface once and then disappear into a private collection for a decade at a time. Priced at £29,000, fully authenticated, and available to view in London by appointment.
