Braise is the most assured of the Hermès reds — a deep, saturated crimson without the orange lift of Rouge Vif or the darkness of Bordeaux. On shiny porosus crocodile it becomes something else entirely: the lacquered scales catch and throw light so that the colour appears to shift between blood-red and near-black as the bag turns in the hand. This is a Birkin 35, the largest of the classic Birkin sizes, and the scale gives the skin room to be read properly. The tight, even tiles across the front flap widen gradually toward the base, each one selected and matched in the atelier before cutting. Porosus is the most prized of the crocodilian skins Hermès works with, taken from the saltwater crocodile and distinguished by its small, regular scales and the fine umbilical line that runs down the centre of the flap. Finished shiny, the skin is hand-polished with agate stone — a process that cannot be hurried and cannot be corrected once begun. The palladium hardware is the right counterweight to this red: cool, bright and unshowy, it keeps the bag from tipping into opulence. The blind stamp A dates the piece to 2017.
