The piece in detail

Tyger Tyger is Alice Shirley's design for Hermès, and it has become one of the few animal compositions the house brings back in new colourways season after season. A Bengal tiger turns through ferns, tall grasses and wildflowers, drawn from observation rather than from heraldry — which is why the stripes break the way real fur does across the shoulder, and why the tail coils back into the field of flowers instead of stopping neatly at the border. The design rewards folding: the head occupies one quarter of the square and the curled tail another, so the scarf reads as a portrait, an abstract, or a band of flowers depending on how it is tied. This is the 70 cm carré in soie vintage — the washed silk twill Hermès uses for a softer, matte finish. It has less spring than the classic 90 twill and falls closer to the body, which makes it easier to knot at the neck and less inclined to slide off a bag handle. The ground here is a pale ivory, the tiger in beige doré and black, and the undergrowth runs through green, pink, yellow and soft brown. All four sides are hand-rolled in orange, and the floral border carries the colours around the edge of the square. The tag colourway reads IL / Beige Doré / Orange. Store fresh and unworn, with the Hermès tag still attached and the care label intact. 70 × 70 cm, 100% silk, made in France. The 70 sits between the Twilly and the classic 90: large enough to fold into a bandeau or wear as a headscarf, small enough to tie at the neck or on a bag handle without the bulk of a 90.
