The piece in detail

A pochette façonnée is a pocket square woven rather than printed. Façonné is the French term for a figured cloth: the motif is built into the structure of the silk on the loom, so it appears and disappears as the light moves across it instead of sitting on the surface as ink. Held flat the square reads as a near-solid block of colour; turned towards a window the pattern lifts out of it. That restraint is the point of the piece — it is the version of the H that can be worn to a meeting without announcing itself from across the room. The design is Grand H: a dense grid of large H letters, each row offset against the one above so the field reads as a checkerboard rather than as stripes. The grid fills a square panel across the centre of the pochette, and a plain woven border frames it on all four sides. Folded, that geometry is useful — a flat presidential fold shows mostly the plain border, a puff fold brings the H field up into view, and a two-point fold gives you a diagonal of both. The colourway is Gris Perle, the pearl grey Hermès has used across silk and leather for decades. It is the most forgiving colour in the pochette range: warm enough not to go cold against navy, light enough to lift a charcoal or black jacket, and neutral enough to sit under any tie. Because the H is woven a half-tone from the ground rather than printed on it, the pattern in a pale grey is even quieter than it is in a dark colourway — at arm's length the square looks like plain silk, and the H only resolves when the light catches the weave. The cloth is pongee silk rather than the heavier twill used for the large carrés: a finer, smoother, lighter weave that folds flat and holds a crisp point in a breast pocket. 42 × 42 cm, 100% silk, made in France, with hand-rolled edges — and because they are rolled by hand, the measurement varies very slightly from square to square.
