The piece in detail
Caban takes its name from the sailor's peacoat, and the reference is exact: a blue so deep it verges on ink, cut with the grey of a North Atlantic sky. It is the navy of naval tailoring rather than of summer stripes, and the maison deploys it sparingly, reserving it for pieces intended to be worn hard and kept long. In leather, it has become the discreet signature of those who find black obvious. Here it dresses the Dépêches, the hand-held pouch descended from the house's 1930s document case — flat, spare, saddle-stitched, leather goods reduced to their essentials. Togo gives the colour its character: the pebbled grain breaks the deep blue into soft variations, richer and less severe than black, kinder to daily wear than any smooth calf. Palladium hardware suits the register exactly — cool, marine, understated. Carried under the arm it finishes a navy or grey suit the way a good watch does; slipped inside a weekend bag it keeps passport, phone and papers in order. It is equally at home in a woman's hands as an architectural clutch, which is quietly how many of these leave the boutique. Navy remains the scarcest of the Dépêches neutrals — produced in slim numbers, it is usually bought by men who already own the black and never resold. Finding one store fresh is the exception rather than the rule. This example carries the blind stamp G and is exactly that: store fresh, unmarked, immaculate inside and out. The palladium is bright, the corners crisp. It has passed authentication with our specialists. See it at our Chelsea Harbour showroom, where private appointments are easily arranged, or ask our personal shoppers to reserve it with worldwide insured delivery.
