Caban is Hermès' deep naval blue — the shade a peacoat is dyed to, and a colour Hermès uses for pieces where authority reads more subtly than in pure black. On the Depeches document holder, Caban becomes a considered alternative for clients whose wardrobe leans navy or charcoal grey rather than pure black. In Togo with palladium, the register is deep, cool and understated. The Depeches carries what black paper-work bags in London law firms carry — a slim thirteen-to-fourteen-inch laptop, a leather folio, a fountain pen and a card wallet — but does so in a construction and finish that identifies its owner immediately to anyone familiar with the house.
