Fauve in matte crocodile is Hermès at its most equestrian — the deep honey-tan the maison built its reputation on, translated into an exotic skin and stripped of lacquer so the scales read as saddlery rather than jewellery. On a Birkin 30 with a Square H blind stamp, this is a 2004 bag from an era when exotic Birkins were made in far smaller numbers, and when Fauve was still the colour most closely associated with the house’s harness-making origins. Matte crocodile rewards close inspection. Without a mirror finish to catch the eye, everything depends on the architecture of the skin itself: tiles matched in graduated size across the front panel and flap, saddle stitching in tonal thread, and a buffed, waxen surface that deepens in character with each year of careful use. Fauve amplifies that effect — like the great Barenia saddle leathers it echoes, it develops warmth and patina rather than wear. This example is offered in good condition, honestly graded: a bag that has been carried and cared for, with the structure sound, the corners holding and the scales unbroken. It comes with its cadenas, lock and both keys. It is offered without a receipt and without CITES paperwork — collectors purchasing for export should enquire before committing, and our team will advise on documentation case by case. At 30 cm the Birkin holds a working day — an A5 diary, a wallet, a phone and a small pouch — which is precisely how a two-decade-old exotic in this colour earns its keep: used, seen and quietly recognised. Inspected at JULL London and available for private viewing by appointment at our Knightsbridge showroom. Pre-owned Hermès, priced without buyer fees.
