A Birkin 30 in shiny black porosus crocodile with palladium hardware — Square Q stamp, excellent preloved condition. Among the most prestigious exotic Birkin configurations the maison has ever produced, the shiny porosus Birkin combines the rarest crocodile species, the most labour-intensive finish, and the canonical black-and-palladium palette. Crocodylus porosus has the most uniformly square scaling pattern of any exotic species in luxury leather. Each scale must be individually polished by hand in the shiny finish process, using cabochon-cut wooden burnishers — a process that takes specialist artisans many hours per skin. The result is the lacquer-bright reflectivity that distinguishes Hermès shiny porosus from any imitation: the light moves across the surface in coherent sheets, scale by scale. In black, the dye penetrates each scale evenly. The 30cm proportion is the original Birkin size from the 1984 commission for Jane Birkin, and remains the most usable everyday size in the exotic Birkin range.
